72 Seasons (Visual Album)

Produced by Radical Media, Metallica's 72 Seasons campaign consisted of 5 live action music videos, 7 animated videos and 12 text videos (each translated into 7 additional languages).

Working alongside creative director Tim Saccenti, I delivered 11 of the 12 text videos, providing graphic treatments, motion design, generative art and video editing services.

Bringing Metallica's Aesthetic into a Brave New World

To put a post-Internet spin on the album's core themes of dysfunction and inner turmoil, I designed glitch-like animations using Generative Adversarial Networks, embracing the advents of New Media technology.

Designing the Text Treatments

Alongside Graphic Designer Nicholas Martin, we conceptualized and created kinetically displaced text treatments to accentuate the record's prevailing sense of ominousness.

Bringing the Designs to Life

My work was later adapted into live visuals for Metallica's 72 Seasons World Tour.

The Final Products

Using the text treatments as a reference point, I designed distinctive motions for each song's lyrics, which were then layered atop the generative art, additional artist contributions and live-action B-role. Paying close attention to rhythm, I color-corrected and cut the pieces together to accentuate each song's pacing.

Adapting for a Global Audience

Leading a team of foreign translators and post-production laborers, all text treatments and accompanying motion designs were adapted into 7 additional languages. Given the drastic difference in the amount of characters language-to-language, close attention was payed to keeping the formatting and rhythm as consistent as possible across all videos.
